i had one of my fantasy city dreams last night; and i remember having these when i was 16 and so skyscraper-obsessed i had two newspaper cut outs of hong kong and singapore pinned neatly to my corkboard noticeboard so it wasn't really a noticeboard but a shrine of my skycraper obsession. and i could go on and on like this.
but the thing about the skyscrapers in my dreams is that they're unrecognisable when you've reached their summits, and lofty elevator rides often result in undiscovered perspectives and obscure spires, greenhouse cathedrals and mist riven landings . like they're made of old hollywood magic.
going to new york will be completely different from the new york i visited in dreamland. but these 1940s photos certainly come close.
